Japan’s Miwa Harimoto reached a career-high world ranking of No. 3 in May 2026, the headline number of a breakout season for the 17-year-old. She is now the highest-ranked non-Chinese woman in the game and the clearest threat to China’s grip on the women’s singles podium.
The ranking did not arrive in isolation. Harimoto opened 2026 by winning the All Japan Championships women’s singles title, beating Hina Hayata 4–3, and later took a WTT Contender singles crown in Zagreb — part of a run of results that pushed her past more established names.
The new face of Japan’s challenge
With brother Tomokazu long established in the men’s top tier, the Harimoto name now sits high on both ranking lists. For Japan, building toward a home-continent push at LA28, a teenager at world No. 3 is the most encouraging marker of the spring.
